As part of our “Together, We Build What’s Possible” end-of-year campaign, we’ve highlighted how DPS students and teachers are shaping what’s possible in our public schools.
Today, we’re lifting up the final core tenet of our work — family engagement, the bridge that connects our schools to the broader Durham community.
At a recent gathering of our Sembrando Raíces (“Planting Roots”) program, DPS parents sat shoulder-to-shoulder practicing public comment testimonies, sharing stories, and building the confidence to advocate for their children. It’s a space where families strengthen their voice — and with it, the future of our schools.
As DPS parent leader Norma Portillo shared: “To me, (this work) is about committing to our children, other children, and future generations. It's an opportunity for us to have a voice and defend the young minds that can't yet do so themselves. It means we are present and will fight when something isn't right. It means that our children are not alone. It also shows that we mothers are stronger than we think.”
Through our Family Engagement program, we walk alongside parents such as Norma as they speak up at school board meetings, navigate resources, and ensure their children have what they need to succeed. These purposeful parent partnerships are goal-oriented and rooted in the belief that student success is built by families, educators, and community members working together.
Our families are the connective tissue of our public school ecosystem. They are the bridge between our schools and the greater community. They are the comfort after a long day — and the steady force shaping tomorrow’s leaders.
With your support, this bridge can only get stronger. Your gift helps sustain family leadership, advocacy, and connection across Durham’s public schools.
Because of you and your continued support, our public school ecosystem can flourish in 2026 and beyond.
Together, we keep building what’s possible for Durham’s public schools.
