Meet Our Team!

Our dedicated team consists of former educators, DPS parents, and Durham residents.  Together, we passionately work toward public schools where every student can thrive.

Brianna Kennedy

Interim Executive Director

Brianna is an advocate for high-quality public education - especially for those who are most vulnerable and often marginalized. Her experiences in and out of the classroom have shaped her ideals and she seeks ways to remain informed of best practices to work with young people.

A native of Savannah, Ga, Brianna came to North Carolina as an undergraduate at North Carolina Central University. She began teaching in Charlotte, NC, and went on to pursue her Master’s of Education Policy from the University of Pennsylvania. After teaching for another year in Boston, Ma, she relocated to Durham with her husband to put down roots and began teaching at Neal Middle School.

Leaving the classroom after 6 years was a difficult decision and for Brianna, it gave her the opportunity to pursue work in state education policy. While researching and analyzing federal and state policies, she realized her heart’s work belongs to the students of Durham.

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors includes Durham natives, DPS parents, business and community leaders, former educators, and, most importantly, public school champions. Their contributions and expertise are vital in driving our long-term success.

“As someone who has worked in community economic development in Durham for over two decades and as a parent of two kids who each spent 14 formative years in Durham Public Schools, I’ve personally seen the positive impact our schools can have on students, families, and our overall community. I serve DPSF because I strongly believe that our community is stronger when our schools are successful and that our schools are stronger when all in our community choose to invest in and send their kids to our public schools.”

Executive Vice-President, Self-Help Ventures Fund, DPSF Board Member since 2023
