Happy Black History Month!
“Time is neutral and does not change things. With courage and initiative, leaders change things.” This quote by the late Rev. Jesse Jackson has resonated with me since I learned of the civil rights icon’s passing on Feb. 17. It does not beg for debate; instead, it invites us to reflect on what we are doing to create change. Rest in Power, Rev. Jackson.
Right before the month began, we learned that the federal administration abandoned its legal pursuit by the U.S. Department of Education to strip diversity, equity, and inclusion measures from our education system by threatening to block federal funding to schools and colleges. The attempt to strip these measures from our schools set off a chain of events that led to the vilification of books and educators. Make no mistake, considerable harm has been done since the rollbacks were announced. However, this legal victory serves as a reminder of the necessary stamina that comes from real people power. It reminds us that history does not make itself; rather, we, the people, shape it for our present and future.
Durham has an admirable history of setting the tone and pace for civic and social movements across the country, often led by our youth. Though we sometimes criticize our youth for not preparing for the future or for living only in the present, I find it fascinating that they are the very individuals Rev. Jackson would likely categorize as courageous. They are the reasons we strive to transform our public schools and, consequently, our community.
The courage and initiative our youth embody doesn’t only shape movements — it shows up every day in our public schools. Academics are bolstered through art, self-care, peer support, family connection, and community partnership, strengthening the circle of support that allows every student to thrive.
‘Til More,
