Teacher Leadership Academy

We are proud to announce the launch of our new Teacher Leadership Academy, developed specifically for durham public school classroom teachers.

The inaugural cohort of twenty teachers will meet one school day per month beginning September, 2019 and ending May, 2020. Participating teachers will:

  • Gain skills designed to enhance their individual teaching practices.

  • Meet and cultivate professional relationships with elected officials and other community leaders.

  • Develop leadership skills needed to make even bigger impacts within their schools and the surrounding community.

The DPSF Teacher Leadership Academy is not a program for teachers who are interested in leaving the classroom. Our goal is to strengthen the role of the teacher and empower teachers to become decision-makers and change agents beyond their classroom walls. We will spend important time learning about the histories of Durham and Durham Public Schools to help our teachers better understand the context through which our students and families engage with DPS. One important goal is to strengthen the already critical partnerships which exist between our schools and the communities they serve.

The DPSF Teacher Leadership Academy will be led by 2018 State Teacher of the Year Freebird McKinney and 2018 Western Regional Teacher of the Year Julie Pittman.

How to apply

The application for the 2019/2020 cohort closed on August 23, 2019. Applicants will be notified by September 9.

In order to be considered, teachers must have at least three years of successful classroom teaching experience and a positive endorsement from their principal. If you are an emerging teacher-leader who is excited about networking with colleagues from other schools and passionate about promoting the teacher profession and the Durham Public Schools, we encourage you to apply.
