We are here standing strong in our rightful place

Immigrant advocacy yard sign

Recent threats and ICE enforcement actions have targeted immigrant families all over the nation, leading to uncertainty and fear that permeate schools, homes, and places of work and worship. For every student, educator, staff member, parent, and family in DPS and beyond who is feeling this fear and uncertainty, we see you, hear you, and stand with you.

Earlier this year, we launched our “Standing Strong/Estamos de Pie” community art campaign, with posters and downloadable artwork, and info/resource packets for schools and families.

Today we are proud to showcase the artwork of Mick Amato, an educator and artist in Durham [@pea_tendril on IG] who produced their original image for our campaign earlier this year. This work now appears in yard signs produced and distributed by our friends at School Parents for Immigrant Defense, an affiliate of Public Schools Strong.

The artwork draws inspiration from local immigrant leaders, who developed the slogan “Aquí Estamos de Pie / Donde Pertenecemos.” The slogan highlights the deep-rooted connections immigrant families have with each other and the land they reside on. Even in times of chaos, the cacti symbolize our collective strength and potential to thrive. The Monarch butterfly is a migratory species and has long been celebrated as a living representation of migration as a natural and often necessary phenomenon. The rising sun portrays the hope we find in the hardest moments, when we lift our eyes to it. Working hand-in-hand, these symbols are true markers of the resilience and strength of immigrants in Durham Public Schools and beyond.

Never forgetting to center our work in love and joy, DPS Foundation is proud to uplift the work and craft of local artists and immigrant leaders, as together, we are stronger. Amato’s “Aquí estamos de Pie” yard sign is now available for pick up and is already appearing at schools and around our community. If you would like to see a yard sign at your school or on your block, please reach out to us: info@bullcityschools.org!

Additionally, the sign artwork is available for download and print for free, alongside a growing collection of artwork and coloring sheets from local artists and DPS educators and students. We are happy to also provide art from Roan Boucher, a local artist and educator, and Delaney O’Connell, a Raleigh-based art teacher.

We are grateful for your ongoing support, as we take action to support public education where everyone is welcome.

In community,

DPS Foundation
