How You Can Support Our Students in the Wake of School Closings

Together we can ensure no student goes hungry or falls behind because of COVID-19

Dear friends and neighbors,

I’m writing in a time of change and uncertainty to update you, affirm our commitment to Durham students, and invite you to provide direct support to DPS students and families impacted by COVID-19 school closures.

As we all make difficult decisions to press pause on events and shift our work and family schedules in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, we also know there is new and urgent work to be done in supporting our students during school closures.

Now as much as ever DPS Foundation is committed to streamlining and increasing charitable giving and distributing resources to the students and families who need it most. That’s why we are playing a coordinating role in raising funds from the community to directly support these students.  We are in close communication with Superintendent Dr. Mubenga, his team, and our partners that provide direct support to students.

Many families depend on daily school attendance for a hot meal as well as a safe learning environment.  Your help is needed on behalf of these students and families.

If you are in a position to support our students in this time, please click here to donate

100 percent of your donation will provide necessary funds for supporting critical needs identified by DPS and our community partners such as meals and remote learning resources.

You can also help us coordinate community support by:

  • Sharing the donation link to your neighborhood listserv

  • Staying up to date with information from our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages @bullcityschools on how to support DPS students

All DPSF events and convenings scheduled for March and April are postponed until further notice. Ball Durham for DPS is being rescheduled for the fall.

To protect our employees and slow the spread of the virus, all DPSF staff are being encouraged to work from home. We are urging anyone who develops symptoms to stay home, avoid contact with others, and seek medical care right away.

We are committed to continuing to keep you informed on the most pressing needs facing DPS students and families. Stay tuned for additional information. We hope you are healthy and taking care of yourself.

Warmly,

Magan Gonzales-Smith

Executive Director
