Scholarship Offerings

DPS Foundation offers scholarships through the Durham Promise Fund as well as a number of named scholarships.

The Durham Promise is a community-funded scholarship program based on the belief that every DPS student deserves an equitable, debt-free college education. All students who apply for a scholarship through DPS Foundation are automatically entered into consideration for a Durham Promise award. The Durham Promise will be awarded to a graduating senior in each traditional senior high school in the Durham Public Schools System in the amount of $3,000. Eligible students must be graduating seniors who expect to enroll in a post-secondary institution in the fall. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required.

We also offer a number of named scholarships. Learn about all of our scholarship funds here.

SCHOLARSHIP Program History

For nearly forty years, college scholarships for DPS seniors have been administered by the Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation (DPSSF). DPSSF originated from the ideas and work of Mrs. Eula Miller, Nezzie Carter-Moore, Joyce Wasdell, Cindy Gardiner, Linda Chandler and Doug Biddy, who identified a great need to support higher education funding for students of middle income families. DPSSF began awarding scholarships to DPS students in 1980. Since then, DPSSF scholarship awards have increased from $500 to $3,000, with over 350 awards given to date. In 2021, DPSSF and the DPS Foundation officially merged.
