We believe DPS teachers act as change agents in their school communities for advancing more equitable school environments for students.

The DPSF Teacher Leadership Academy creates a pipeline of teacher leaders in DPS who develop an understanding of the role of the teacher in driving change in their school and community. Their work is grounded in the history and current context of inequity in Durham and public schools which guides their work in advancing more equitable schools.

Teacher Leaders will be able to:

  • Build skills in cultivating relationships that help advance a culture of teacher leadership in their school/district.

NC Professional Teaching Standard: Standard IC - Teachers demonstrate leadership. They contribute to the establishment of positive working conditions in their school.

  • Identify ways in which their school’s instruction and culture perpetuate inequity for students.

NC Professional Teaching Standard: Standard ID - Teachers demonstrate leadership. Teachers advocate for schools and students.

  • Develop an understanding of how other systems interact with public schools to perpetuate inequity for their students.

NC Professional Teaching Standard: Standard IIB -Teachers embrace diversity in the school community and world.
